Ben, Philippe and Dave - Can we get a little more personal about the personal computer? This was a really big deal, and from a communications perspective I continue to be impressed with how much IBM communicators/marketers got right:
- Renaming the category (it had been called "microcomputer" before IBM entered the market). It's like they took a chapter out of Ries and Trout's 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing. IBM named and owned the "Personal Computer" and "PC" category.
- What's the insdie story behind the idea of making the computer friendly ("personal") and the "little tramp" character in TV and print ads. Some people look at the Mac and Apple's "1984" Superbowl ad as the originators of friendly computing, but IBM's marcom efforts were way ahead (and sold a lot more computers).
- First in mind: IBM didn't make the first mainframe or PC, but their marcom put them first in mind (Immutable Law #1 Leadership: "It's better to be first than better and Law #3 Mind: It's better to be first in mind than first in market."
- Don
Today, IBM is helping communicators online. The company is engaged in
social computing, the premise of which, at IBM, is to design digital systems that provide a social context for Web-based activities.
IBM's
Social Computing Group created
WORLD JAM to provide a platform where employees could help each other: Not by replicating previous forms of computer mediated communication (CMC), but by trying to shape the intranet into a different kind of CMC.
Multimedia research groups around the world in IBM's Research Laboratories are emphasising enterprise business transformation.
IBM is well-known as
